She was single, so the second name wasn’t a married name. Why two names? I dug around for a while longer. Anna Kuentzy cropped up in later references. I discovered that she’d married, and even found when and where she died. But the life I could trace for her wasn’t the story that had begun to form in my head. https://www.annemiekewaite.com/journey/the-empty-suitcase monthly 0.5 2026-09-22 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/69d3fe4eeba3b754e9f1c63f/21cdffd8-d7f6-40f4-808f-629d1b2f1ce4/PXL_20260725_155116526.NIGHT.jpg Journey - The Empty Suitcase - ‘Yeah,’ he said, ‘it’s quite the story.’ I turned a few more pages until I found it. ‘Hindrik Kraai is mum’s great-great grandfather,’ I said. ‘He’s the fork in the family tree. He was illegitimate and so was given his mother’s family name. I sometimes wonder what it might otherwise have been.’ I remember a strange thought as my finger traced the name on the page. All these people had once been real. They'd laughed, worked, married, argued, buried their loved ones and somehow carried on. Just as we do. Mum was one of them now. She'd become an ancestor. To me, to my children, and one day to those who come after us. Another name in the family tree. ‘Kraai is an old local name,’ he said, breaking the silence. ‘Have you found any others?’ https://www.annemiekewaite.com/journey/swiss-anabaptist-exile monthly 0.5 2026-10-02 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/69d3fe4eeba3b754e9f1c63f/418a204c-a398-4ae7-a42f-844b3694652e/Map+Journey+Switzerland+to+Low+Countries.jpeg Journey - Journeys: Anabaptist Echoes - Their journey: the Anabaptist exile of 1711 Banished, they left behind homes, livelihoods and certainty, carrying little more than belief and resilience. They did not know where the road would take them, only that they could not stay. But decisions had been made. Lines had been drawn.
